How to Prepare Your HVAC System for an Alabama Summer

If you've spent a summer in Madison County, you already know what's coming. By late May the heat is serious, and by July, your air conditioner will be running more hours in a single day than most systems in the country run in a week. That's why spring — right now — is the most important time of year to give your HVAC system some attention.

Here's a practical checklist to work through before temperatures climb.

1. Replace or Clean Your Air Filter

This is the single easiest thing you can do, and it matters more than most homeowners realize. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which forces your system to work harder, reduces efficiency, and can eventually cause the evaporator coil to freeze. Check your filter now and replace it if it looks gray or loaded with debris. During peak Alabama summer, most homes need a new filter every 30–60 days.

2. Test Your System Before You Need It

Don't wait for the first 95-degree day to find out your AC isn't working. Turn it on now. Set the thermostat a few degrees below the current indoor temperature and let it run for 15–20 minutes. Make sure cool air is coming from all vents, the outdoor unit is running, and there are no unusual sounds. If something seems off, you'll want to get a technician out while schedules are still open — not in the middle of a heatwave when every HVAC company in Huntsville is booked out.

3. Clear Around the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser needs adequate airflow to reject heat effectively. Walk around the unit and clear any grass, weeds, mulch, or debris that has built up over the winter. Aim for at least 18–24 inches of clear space on all sides. Also check that no shrubs have grown into the unit — this is more common than you'd think after a full growing season.

4. Check and Clean Your Vents

Walk through your home and make sure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture pushed against a return vent is one of the most common causes of comfort problems and reduced system efficiency. While you're at it, wipe down the vent covers — they accumulate dust over winter and can restrict airflow when they get heavily coated.

5. Look at Your Condensate Drain Line

In Alabama's humid summers, your air conditioner removes a significant amount of moisture from the air — which drains out through the condensate line. If that line gets clogged with algae or debris, water can back up into the unit or overflow into your home. Pour a cup of diluted bleach or white vinegar down the condensate drain access point (usually a PVC pipe near the air handler) once a month during cooling season as a preventive measure.

6. Check Your Thermostat

If your thermostat is more than 10 years old, it's worth checking its calibration. A thermostat that reads 2–3 degrees off can cause your system to run significantly more than necessary. If you've been thinking about upgrading to a smart thermostat, spring is a great time — you'll see the savings all summer long.

7. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

The steps above are things any homeowner can do — but a professional spring tune-up goes deeper. A licensed technician will check refrigerant levels, inspect electrical connections, test capacitors and contactors, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, and measure airflow — catching anything that could turn into a breakdown in July.
